The correct focusing of a photo is very important. It tells the viewer where too look. What element should be looked at first. But unfocused items in the background should not be left out as well. They can tell the viewer "a background" story. Where the photo was taken, under what circumstances etc Below the same photo, which a different Focus on each one. The top photo concentrates on the water, and uses some grass as an element to increase the atmosphere in the photo. The 2nd image, focuses on the elements in front, and leaves out the water element pretty much. The results are quite different.
